Second set of "before" measurements taken

All the items that you won't bring on the trail will be set aside and put in storage. You'll also have an opportunity to take one last shower as this is your last stop in civilization for about a week.

There will be two 500' climbs and descents today

Camp at North Shore campsite, site 81 on Mill Branch, elevation 1800'.

Miles today: 8. Total miles: 13.6

Possible bailout: Back to Fontana Dam

Hike about 7 reasonably level miles on the Lakeshore Trail.

Camp at Kirkland Creek, site 76, elevation 1770'

Miles today: 7. Total miles: 20.6

Possible bailout: Very few good options. Fontana Dam or Lakeview Dr. are possible but far. It may be possible to evacuate by motorboat.

Day Hike 1.2 miles on the Goldmine Loop Trail

Day Hike 0.4 miles on the Tunnel Bypass Trail

Day Hike 0.6 miles through the Tunnel to nowhere

Day hike 2.2 miles on the Lakeshore Trail

Get backpacks and hike 4.1 miles up Forney Creek Trail

Camp at Jonas Creek campsite, site 70, elevation 2400'

Miles today: 10.7. Total miles: 40.3

Possible bailout: Lakeview Dr.

Hike about 3 miles past Forney Creek Cascade to the Forney Ridge Trail.


Forney Creek Cascade

Hike 3.5 miles up to Clingman's Dome, the highest point in The Great Smoky Mountain National Park, elevation 6643'.

Miles today: 6.5. Total miles: 52.3

End of hike: Clingman's Dome access road.
