Western Connecticut / Massachusetts Appalachian Trail

Last Updated: 4/24/2008

The 2200 mile long Appalachian Trail runs from Georgia to Maine. We will be hiking the beautiful stretch that spans western Connecticut and Massachusetts, during what we hope will be peak foliage season. The trip will go over Bear Mountain, the highest mountain summit in Connecticut, as well as Mt. Everett in Massachusetts, which has 360 degree views from the top.

See a wild and beautiful landscape -- within driving distance of New York City, Boston, Hartford, Springfield, and Albany -- lose weight (or more accurately, improve body composition), and see brilliant fall foliage.

Menus

We don't believe in austere eating regimens. Because backpacking is rigorous and demanding (as well as rewarding), you must feed your body in order for it perform. Your body will dictate that you eat nutritious food often, almost continually. Please check out the planned menus for the trip.

These lists are not necessarily comprehensive and may be altered or augmented. Furthermore, if you cannot live without, say a 5 pound chocolate cake, bring it along. After carrying it 40 miles through the mountains, your body will not desire those empty calories, nor want to carry the dead weight around any longer.

Itinerary

The Fall Foliage Fitpacking Trip will be from October 11-19, 2008. Here is the proposed itinerary.

Equipment List

Here is a suggested list of equipment to bring.

Cost

$925 per person double occupancy. Here, double occupancy means that you will share a hotel room with another trip participant. You may also wish to share a tent with another participant. This isn't a requirement, but it will cut down on total weight you carry, an important consideration.

You will also be responsible for transportation to and from Bradley International Airport or Windsor Locks, CT as well as any restaurant meals off the trail. Finally, you will be responsible for any personal calls you make or receive on our emergency satellite phone or from motel/hotel rooms.

Trip Leaders

Steve Silberberg, who lives in Hull, MA has many years of backpacking experience over a variety of terrains and guides most Fitpacking trips. He is a SOLO certified Wilderness First Responder.

2nd guide TBD

Weather

Weather is always an important concern when backpacking. October can be a beautiful and warm month, but it can also be rainy and cold. Expect 30s at night and 60s during the day, but be prepared for frost and expect lower temperatures at higher elevations. You can see more detailed climate information at weather.com, using Cornwall, CT and Great Barrington, MA as reference towns.
